Kari Tapiola, ILO: Solutions to the social problems of globalisation must be sought with an open mind

(Helsinki 04.10.2002 – Juhani Artto) “We are fairly clear about the social problems involved in globalisation. We know what is going wrong. Now we must find answers and build bridges to solve these problems”, says ILO Executive Director Kari Tapiola. Tapiola spoke at the end of August in Helsinki about the background to the founding of a World Commission tackling the social dimensions of globalisation.

The decision to establish the Commission was made in November 2001 by the International Labour Organisation – ILO. Finnish President Tarja Halonen and the President of Tanzania jointly chair the World Commission, which began its work in February 2002.
