Rasmus Turtia (32)

Port work can be strenuous and demanding, but it also provides a wide choice of duties and opportunities for career advancement. Though originally expecting only a short stint in this occupation, Rasmus Turtia has now spent a decade working on the waterside.

  • Rasmus has served as a stevedore for Finnsteve Oy at the Port of Vuosaari in Helsinki since 2017
  • Rasmus is a member of the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union AKT.

“Union membership is customary at this workplace, and the union’s unemployment fund helps to secure your income when work is irregular, especially when you start out. The union branch also organises things, with the shop steward on hand every day. The shop steward has helped a lot with redeployment to new duties. There are various fringe benefits for members, including holiday home rentals and support for cultural and sporting interests. We have our own sessions in the floorball hall and at the ice rink, with many of our people enjoying these pursuits in their spare time.”

Stevedores earn a basic hourly wage plus special bonuses for working conditions and occupational qualifications. The hourly starting wage at Finnsteve is about EUR 22, rising to about EUR 30 at the top end of the pay scale. You can also earn more by working overtime.
