Finnish Seafarers’ Union

Members of the Finnish Seafarers’ Union work in maritime and inland waterway navigation or in related onshore positions.

Seafarers’ Union members serve in the merchant navy, coastal and inland waterway transport, on tugboats, and in other duties related to navigation.

Joining the union

You may join the Finnish Seafarers’ Union by completing the online membership application form.

The membership subscription fee for the Seafarers’ Union in 2025 is 1.55 per cent of gross wages. This membership subscription fee includes membership of the unemployment fund. The membership fee is tax-deductible.

Student membership

Students of navigation may already join the Seafarer’s Union while studying. Student membership is free of charge. The normal membership subscription fee is payable from taxable earnings if a student works while studying.

Student members are eligible for the same membership benefits as other members of the Seafarer’s Union.

The M/S Finnmaid is a vessel for cargo and passengers, each of which must be properly accommodated. Jemina Lindqvist works to ensure that these onboard facilities are in tiptop condition.

  • Jemina has worked in various seafaring capacities at Finnlines since 2019, and is currently a Cabin Refurbisher on the M/S Finnmaid.
  • She is a member of the Finnish Seafarers’ Union.

“I rely on the Seafarer’s Union to watch over our wages and rights at work. While I haven’t been especially active in union work, I do read the union newsletter and I think that summer chalet rentals are one example of a worthwhile membership benefit.”
